Beautiful blue skies, warm sun, great surf , who could ask for anyhting more? Well, yeah…. a little less wind, actually a lot less wind. This Saturday, May 15th, a dozen courageous painters joined in Avon by the sea for our 3rd annual seascape painting workshop. It was a lot of fun despite winds that literally blew whole easels over the railing of the boardwalk. We lost a few hats, paper towels and a brush or two to the elements otherwise it was great.

The first hour we spent with me doing a demonstration. I shared some basic principles in atmospheric conditions while painting by the ocean, composition and the importance of values in laying out your painting. We decided to work with just three colors, Crimson, Lemon yellow, & ultramrine blue, plus black and white. These basic colors are all that’s necessary for the beginner seascape painter. They can cover a large gamut of colors and although other hues are necessary you gain more experience, three were plenty to get the job at hand done. Thanks to all of you that came out and I look forward to doing it again real soon.

Chemists Produce a New Blue!
Blue pigments of the past have often been expensive (ultramarine blue was made from the gemstone lapis lazuli, ground up), poisonous (cobalt blue is a possible carcinogen and Prussian blue, another well-known pigment, can leach cyanide) or apt to fade (many of the organic ones fall apart when exposed to acid or heat).

So it was a pleasant surprise to chemists at Oregon State University when they created a new, durable and brilliantly blue pigment by accident.
Completed four plein air pieces foe an exhibit at the Hawthorne Library along with some other local and very talented artists. The view of the pictures posted were from the westside of the park.
