How to paint what you can’t see!
It sounds like more of a question for philosophers than artists but that was the question all of us asked when we stood facing the ocean this morning, paintboxes by our side, rearing to go. Painting seascapes are a formidable challenge to the plein air painter on a clear day but throw some dense fog in and you have some serious head scratching going on! Ten artists gather today for our Spring seascape workshop in Avon-by-the-sea. Despite the intense fog and it being virtually impossible to see the ocean, it was quite a successful day and participants knocked out some nice paintings. Painting outdoors in essence, is a lesson in problem solving and always an educational experience regardless of the subject matter. Today the lesson Dujour was keeping the value tones very tight. Painting in fog is a wonderful way to observe the prism in nature. In all that veil of moisture between the artist and the sea is a world of color, subtle as it appears.
